After giving government several warnings that they will lay down tools if they are not provided with protective gear that can support them in case of assisting Covid19 patients, health workers at the referral facility, Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital in Blantyre have finally lay down their tools.
A visit to the facility confirmed that indeed patients have been left unattended for some hours since those on night shift left their duty stations.
A source who spoke to this publication on condition of anonymity at the hospital’s laundry department confirmed that indeed nurses and other health workers have stayed away.
“Those that were on night shift have knocked off and left keys at switch board but as of now no one has showed of to replace them,
“Our priorities are a shame and nurses are going through a lot, when they want to board a minibus while in uniform they are denied, people are talking all sorts of things and also you know they can’t work under such circumstances where Covid19 patients are still coming ” he said
Health workers on Tuesday (7th April) warned government that if there is no action to their demands by the 11th April they will stop working.
Earlier in the week the country’s vice president Saulos Chilima told the media during a press briefing in the Capital, Lilongwe that it is sad that ministers in the special task force committee on Covid19 are still pocketing allowances, an allegation which the health Minister, Jappie Mhango vehemently dinied.
Meanwhile, Malawi has registered a total of nine (9) coronavirus confirmed cases.
