Former Mzuzu Warriors prolific striker, Maxwell Gastin scored a hat-trick in Mzuzu for his new team, Silver Strikers to claim maximum points in a TNM Super League encounter played before a small crowd at the Mzuzu stadium on Saturday.
Popularly known as ‘Thodo’, Gastin scored a goal in the first half before completing his hat-trick with two classic second half goals taking advantage of poor coordination between the goalkeeper and defenders for the home team.
This is the second hat-trick to be registered at Mzuzu stadium so far after Clever Kaira for Ekwendeni Hammers registered the first in a game his team beat TN Stars of Kasungu District.
Super substitute and Flames international, Haji Wali condemned Warriors with the fourth goal in additional time when he released a thunderous grass cutter from 25 yards which gave Mzuzu Warriors goal custodian Piliran Mapira no chance in goals.
During post match interview, Silver Strikers assistant coach, Macdonald ‘nginde’ Mtetemera praised his charges for executing the game plan accordingly.
“Am very excited, we were a little shaky in defence during the earliest moments of the game but we managed to settle down and play our type of game which has resulted into those four goals against that difficult side,” Mtetemera said.
His counterpart, coach for Mzuzu Warriors, Gilbert Chirwa who looked very heartbroken said his boys are still learning several things hence failing to convert into goals a number of clear cut chances created in the opening moments of the game.
“We assembled these young boys from within Mzuzu town and they are still learning, but with time expect them to catch up and start giving out good results, but on the other hand the officiating personnel has also let us down but otherwise it was a good game,” Chirwa said.
To his accolade for registering a hat-trick, Silver’s Gastin went away with a ball which he received from a Super League of Malawi official.
